FBI agents and San Diego State University Police officers have arrested a man in
connection with hoax threats made against the campus. Cristobal Fernando Gonzalez,
age 32, of Bonita, California was arrested on Wednesday night on federal charges of
using the Internet to send a threatening communication. I want to emphasize that these
threats were a hoax - the campus was never in any immediate danger. The individual
arrested is not believed to have any affiliation with SDSU. The university remains open
and classes and other campus activities are continuing this week as scheduled.
I'd like to acknowledge the outstanding work of our SDSU Police officers and FBI agents
involved in bringing this incident to a speedy conclusion. We are fortunate to have
close working relationships with other law enforcement agencies to the benefit of the
entire campus community.
It is a sad fact that SDSU is not the only university to have been the target of a hoax
following Monday's tragic shooting at Virginia Tech. Still, I encourage each of you to
remain vigilant in terms of your own personal security and that of the campus. Be aware
of your surroundings and contact the SDSU Police immediately at (619) 594-1991 if you
see anything suspicious.
